Miira Kangas (b. 1989) is an artist from Naantali. She is a member of Taidekeskus Into ry and works at the art center TaidePompo. Visual artist Eija Ruoho has acted as her mentor since 2009.
Miira designs dresses. Her work focuses on painting costume sketches with acrylic colours and making costumes. What is surprising about Miira’s work is the productivity: in the morning she paints several paintings at the same time and in the afternoon she drapes fabric over a mannequin. Actually, she’s doing the same as the designers of fashion houses.
In 2017, Miira became interested in costume design and a mannequin, fabrics and sewing supplies were purchased for her. In 2020, Miira got her own studio from Art Center Into and all the fabrics, rosettes and laces from a bridal shop’s final stock for her free use. Miira’s first solo exhibition was in 2023 in Turku at Galleria Into at the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova museum. Miira’s first exhibition consisted of more than 80 abstract and colourful paintings and unique pieces of evening gowns. The works were made during 2020–2023.
The subject of the paintings is always an evening dress, although the expression is almost completely abstract. It’s astounding how the composition of the paintings brings out a feminine figure or some kind of beauty ideal and at the same time operates with concrete repetition.
Miira’s spontaneous explanation of why she makes costumes is as follows: “It’s fun.”
